- Fuel prices. A furnace runs on gas; a heat pump runs on electricity. Which is cheaper to run depends on the gap between gas and electric rates, and that gap moves.

On noise, both have an outdoor unit. A newer variable-speed heat pump is usually as quiet or quieter than an older AC condenser. Placement near a bedroom window matters more than the type.

A heat pump isn’t automatically right for every home. Keeping gas can be the better call when:
- Your furnace is newer and only the AC has failed (replace the AC, keep the furnace).
- Your electrical panel can’t carry the new load and a panel upgrade would blow the budget.
- You heat with gas elsewhere and want to keep that infrastructure.
