Hard water makes all three more likely here. If a tech wants to replace the entire ice maker without checking the water supply and filter first, that’s a flag.
Repair or replace: the honest math
A useful rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit, and the appliance is past the rough midpoint of its expected life, replacing usually wins. The numbers shift by appliance and by who made it.

- A defined, moderate repair on a unit with years left (igniter, heating element, valve, gasket): repair almost always wins.

How to find an honest tech

Confirm they’re registered. In California, anyone who repairs household appliances for pay is supposed to hold an appliance service dealer registration, administered by the state’s Bureau of Household Goods and Services (the old appliance-repair “BEAR” program now lives under BHGS). You can look up a business and see any disciplinary history through the bureau’s license search. It takes two minutes and tells you whether you’re dealing with a real, accountable business.
Check the contractor’s license when the job calls for one. Larger jobs, HVAC work, and certain installations require a contractor’s license from the Contractors State License Board, which has a free online lookup. Verifying the license number a company gives you is a normal, expected thing to do.
Insist on EPA certification for anything with refrigerant. Repairs to a fridge or freezer sealed system involve refrigerant, and the tech is required to hold EPA Section 608 certification to handle it legally. If a fridge sealed-system repair is on the table, it’s fair to ask.
Expect a written estimate before work begins. California rules require service dealers to give you a written estimate and your authorization before they start. A trustworthy tech welcomes that. Vague verbal quotes that balloon at the end are the pattern to avoid.

- Pull your exact model and serial and quote the real part by number, with the part cost and labor broken out.
- Rule out the cheap stuff first (scale, a clogged vent or drain, a saturated water filter, dirty coils) before recommending an expensive replacement.
- Tell you plainly when replacing the appliance is the better value, even though that means no repair sale for them.
- Leave you with a written estimate you authorize before any parts go in.
