Why Your AC Isn’t Cooling

The hottest stretch of a Tri-Valley summer is exactly when an air conditioner picks to quit. From June into October the inland flats around Livermore push past 100°F, and the air out here is dry and full of road dust. Your AC runs hard for months on end. So when the house won’t cool down, the cause is usually less dramatic than people fear.

The usual culprit isn’t a broken machine

Most of the time, a local AC loses its cooling because it’s choking on dirt. The outdoor condenser coil gets caked with grit blown off 580 and 680, mixed with grassland pollen and yard debris. Pair that with an air filter nobody’s changed in a year, and the system simply can’t move heat anymore. It’s not a failure so much as neglect catching up. The good news: a fair amount of that you can check yourself before anyone comes out.

Things worth checking before you call

None of this requires tools or refrigerant knowledge. Give it fifteen minutes.

  • Thermostat. Set to cool, set below room temperature, and the batteries aren’t dead. Sounds obvious. It’s caught a lot of people.
  • The air filter. If it’s gray and packed, swap it. A clogged filter alone can mimic a serious problem and even freeze the coil into a block of ice. This is the single cheapest fix in the whole building.
  • The outdoor unit. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, and any patio clutter crowding it. The condenser needs room to breathe.
  • The breaker. Check that it hasn’t tripped. Flip it fully off, then on.
  • The fins. With the power off, gently rinse the condenser fins from the inside out with a garden hose. Easy does it, they bend.
  • The condensate drain line. Algae and slime love to clog it, and a backed-up line can shut the system down. A clear line matters more than people realize.

If the house cools off after one of these, great. If not, you’re into real service territory.

What actually needs a technician

Some failures need a licensed set of hands. The most common around here is a failed capacitor. It’s a cheap part that bakes in the heat of a closed-up cabinet all summer, and it’s a frequent casualty in this climate. A bad contactor or a weakening condenser fan motor are in the same category: routine repairs, not catastrophes.

Then there’s refrigerant. If your system is low, it has a leak. Refrigerant doesn’t get used up, so a unit that’s short on it is losing it somewhere that needs to be found and sealed. Topping it off and walking away just buys you a few weeks. That matters because of the compressor, the expensive heart of the system. Heat, dirty coils, and running low on refrigerant all wear a compressor out years before its time.

The freon conversation to watch for

If a tech proposes adding “a pound of freon” and you’ve heard that pitch before on the same unit, ask about the leak directly. Recharging every summer is money poured out year after year, and on older systems running R-22, that refrigerant keeps getting pricier and harder to get. A recharge without a leak search is a patch, not a fix.

Telling a fair diagnosis from a sales pitch

A good technician diagnoses before quoting. They tell you what failed, explain why, and hand you a written estimate. Be cautious if someone pushes a full system replacement before they’ve actually diagnosed anything.

A couple of facts help you hold your ground. Anyone touching refrigerant is legally required to hold EPA Section 608 certification, and any HVAC work in California needs an active CSLB license (a C-20 for this trade). Repair or replace

Central AC and heat pump systems generally last 12 to 18 years. The routine stuff is worth doing at any age: a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, thermostat, or drain line are all sensible repairs even on an older unit. The hard call is the compressor. Replacing one on a system that’s already old rarely pencils out, and you’re usually better off putting that money toward a new system.
